Production of polyhydroxyalkanoate nanoparticles using a green solvent

Biopolymer nanoparticles (NPs) produced from poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) are typically formed by first dissolving the polymer in organic solvents. In order to eliminate use of toxic solvents, an alternative “green” solvent system using glacial acetic acid was used this study for preparation NPs via nanoprecipitation. The influence various factors on resulting particle size investigated including emulsifying agent, temperatures stock and receiving solutions, concentration solution. addition emulsifier significantly reduced NP size, whereas temperature had minimal over tested range. By varying solution, can be adequately controlled. minimum prepared a solution 0.5 ml at 80°C into 100 70 nm with narrow distribution. Imaging scanning electron microscopy revealed smooth spherical thermal structural analysis showed only minor changes properties comparison source PHBV powder. Overall, results show that is appropriate dissolution subsequent formation biopolymer NPs.
